Porcelain Veneers

Transform Your Smile

Do you hide your teeth in photos because of chips, cracks, stains, or gaps? Porcelain veneers are ultra-thin ceramic shells bonded to the front of your teeth that can correct all of those imperfections at once — delivering a complete smile transformation in just two appointments. Dental porcelain is also naturally stain-resistant, so your results stay bright long after treatment.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Veneers are precision-crafted sheaths of dental porcelain bonded to the visible surface of your teeth. Because they cover and conceal the front of the tooth, they can correct a wide range of imperfections in one treatment — chips, cracks, deep staining, gaps, and even mildly crooked teeth.

Many patients refer to veneers as "instant orthodontics" — without wires or months of treatment, the appearance of a straighter, more even smile can be achieved in just a few visits. We also offer Lumineers, a brand of ultra-thin veneer that requires little to no removal of natural tooth structure.

Am I a Candidate?

Veneers are an excellent solution for patients with:

• Cosmetic cracks or chips in front teeth • Deep discoloration that whitening hasn't resolved • Misshapen or uneven teeth • Small gaps between teeth • Slightly crooked teeth (without significant bite issues)

The best candidates have healthy gums and sufficient enamel. Dr. McVety will evaluate your smile thoroughly during your consultation and let you know if veneers are the right path — or if another approach might serve you better.

The Veneer Process

Receiving veneers typically takes two appointments:

Appointment 1 — Preparation Dr. McVety removes a thin layer of enamel (usually less than a millimeter) to create space for the veneer. Digital impressions are taken and sent to our dental lab. You leave wearing a set of comfortable temporary veneers.

Appointment 2 — Bonding When your custom veneers are ready, Dr. McVety checks the fit and shade against your smile, makes any final refinements, and permanently bonds each veneer in place with a strong dental adhesive. The result is a seamless, natural-looking finish that becomes part of your smile.

How to Care for Your Veneers

Porcelain veneers can be cared for just like natural teeth — with a few sensible precautions:

• Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste to avoid micro-scratches • Floss daily to remove bacteria from the gum line around each veneer • Avoid biting hard objects (ice, pens, fingernails) that could chip the porcelain • If you grind at night, ask Dr. McVety about a night guard to protect your investment • Visit Casco Bay Smiles twice a year for cleanings and veneer checks

How Long Do Veneers Last?

Studies show that about 95% of patients still have their veneers after five years, more than 90% after a decade, and roughly 83% after 20 years. On average, expect 10–15 years — with diligent care, some patients keep theirs for 30 years.

The most common cause of veneer failure is fracture from biting hard or inedible objects. Routine brushing, flossing, and twice-yearly checkups are the best things you can do to protect them.

Veneers vs. Other Cosmetic Options

Veneers vs. Teeth Whitening — Whitening only changes color. Veneers change color, shape, and size simultaneously, and the porcelain resists future staining.

Veneers vs. Dental Bonding — Bonding is faster and less expensive, but typically lasts 5–10 years and can stain over time. Veneers offer a more durable, comprehensive result.

Veneers vs. Invisalign — For significant crowding or bite issues, Invisalign is the better choice. For minor misalignment where the primary goal is aesthetics, veneers can achieve a straighter-looking smile without months of treatment.

We'll walk you through all the options during your consultation — no pressure, no jargon.
