Dental Bonding

Quick Cosmetic Fixes

When your teeth have stains, chips, gaps, or other imperfections, it's easy to feel hesitant about your smile. Cosmetic dental bonding lets Dr. McVety correct those flaws in a single appointment — using tooth-colored composite resin that blends seamlessly with your natural teeth. No lab wait, no multiple visits, no removing healthy enamel.

What Is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding uses the same composite resin material as tooth-colored fillings, but applied for cosmetic purposes. The resin is carefully shaded to match — or subtly enhance — your existing teeth, then sculpted directly on the tooth surface and hardened with a curing light.

Because the material is applied without removing healthy tooth structure, bonding is one of the most conservative cosmetic treatments available. It can address a wide range of concerns: chips, small cracks, staining that whitening can't fix, gaps between teeth, exposed root surfaces, and teeth that look too short or oddly shaped.

Benefits of Dental Bonding

Single appointment — most cases complete in about an hour • No enamel removal — unlike veneers, bonding is reversible and non-invasive • Affordable — typically the least expensive cosmetic option • Natural-looking results — resin is shaded to match your teeth precisely • Long-lasting — with proper care, bonding holds up for 5–10 years • Versatile — covers chips, gaps, stains, exposed roots, and misshapen teeth

The Bonding Process

Bonding requires no anesthesia in most cases and no preparation of the surrounding tooth. Here's what to expect:

1. Dr. McVety selects a composite resin shade that matches your natural teeth 2. The tooth surface is lightly conditioned to help the resin adhere 3. The resin is applied and artistically sculpted into the ideal shape 4. A curing light hardens the material in seconds 5. Dr. McVety polishes and fine-tunes the surface for a seamless finish

The entire appointment typically takes 30–60 minutes per tooth.

Caring for Bonded Teeth

Bonding is durable but not indestructible. To get the most out of your results:

• Brush and floss daily and visit Casco Bay Smiles twice a year for cleanings • Avoid biting fingernails, pens, or hard foods directly on bonded teeth • Limit coffee, red wine, and other darkly pigmented foods — composite resin can stain over time • If you grind your teeth at night, ask Dr. McVety about a night guard to protect the bonding

Is Dental Bonding Right for You?

Bonding is an excellent first step for most cosmetic concerns — especially if you want visible results without a major time or financial commitment. It works best for:

• Chipped or cracked front teeth • Small gaps between teeth • Discoloration that hasn't responded to whitening • Teeth that appear too short or uneven • Exposed root surfaces causing sensitivity

If your goals involve more dramatic reshaping or a full-arch transformation, Dr. McVety may also discuss porcelain veneers as an alternative. Both options will be on the table during your consultation — with no pressure to decide on the spot.
