Overcoming Dental Anxiety with Sedation Dentistry
By Dr. Rob McVety · June 10, 2024
Dental anxiety stops millions of people from getting necessary care. Learn how nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation work — and which might be right for you.
Fear and anxiety are among the most common reasons people avoid the dentist. Sedation dentistry makes treatment comfortable and accessible, even for patients with significant anxiety.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Inhaled through a small nasal mask, nitrous oxide takes effect within minutes. You remain fully conscious and responsive but feel calm and relaxed. When treatment ends, the effects reverse almost immediately — most patients can drive themselves home.
*Best for:* Mild to moderate anxiety, sensitive gag reflex, shorter procedures, patients who prefer to stay alert.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Dr. McVety prescribes a sedative medication (typically a benzodiazepine) taken about an hour before your appointment. You'll feel deeply relaxed and may have little to no memory of the procedure. You remain conscious and can respond to instructions throughout.
*Best for:* Moderate to significant anxiety, longer or more complex procedures, patients who want minimal memory of the visit.
*Note:* You'll need a driver to and from the appointment. Effects persist for several hours after.
