Can Invisalign Clear Aligners Fix Your Bite?

By Dr. Rob McVety · June 25, 2024

Invisalign does more than straighten teeth — it can correct overbites, underbites, crossbites, open bites, crowding, and gaps.

Invisalign uses a series of clear, custom-made aligners to gradually shift teeth into proper position. Each aligner is worn for approximately two weeks before progressing to the next.

Bite Issues Invisalign Can Address

- Overbite — Upper teeth overlap lower teeth excessively; aligners move upper teeth back and lower teeth forward. Elastics may assist with more pronounced cases. - Underbite — Lower teeth sit in front of upper teeth; left untreated it causes wear and chewing difficulty. Elastics attached to aligners are commonly used. - Crossbite — Some teeth are too far forward while others are too far back, causing chipping and gum recession. Aligners move each tooth into correct position. - Open bite — Upper and lower front teeth don't touch when the mouth is closed, often causing speech and chewing issues. Aligners close the gap over time. - Crowding — Insufficient jaw space causes teeth to overlap and twist. Aligners create space and improve hygiene access. - Gaps — Spaces between teeth can cause bite misalignment and TMJ stress. Aligners bring teeth together evenly.

How It Compares to Braces

Treatment time varies from a few months to a couple of years depending on complexity. Aligners are removable, require no dietary restrictions, and are nearly invisible during wear.
