Can Dental Implants Fall Out?

By Dr. Rob McVety · July 15, 2024

Dental implants are designed to last long term. Here's why they rarely fail, what causes a loose feeling, and what warning signs to watch for.

Dental implants are specifically designed for long-term stability. The chances of an implant becoming truly loose or dislodged are extremely rare when proper care is followed.

Why an Implant Might Feel Loose

The implant post itself almost never loosens — the sensation is usually the abutment screw that connects the crown to the implant. If the surrounding bone creates resistance during healing, the screw can occasionally work loose. This is a straightforward fix: we replace the abutment screw and you're back to normal.

Warning Signs to Watch For

Contact us promptly if you notice any of the following:

- Swelling or discoloration around the implant site - Persistent pain or discomfort - Bleeding that doesn't resolve - Visible movement in the crown

Documenting your symptoms helps our team pinpoint the cause quickly.

The Healing Timeline

Full osseointegration — where the implant fuses with your jawbone — takes a few months and varies by individual. During this period, avoid smoking, limit alcohol, and follow all post-operative instructions carefully. Bacteria entering the implant site during healing is the primary risk factor for failure.

Long-Term Care

Brush and floss daily, keep your regular checkups, and let us know immediately if anything feels off. With consistent care, implants reliably last 20+ years.
