A Comprehensive Guide to Root Canal Treatment

By Dr. Rob McVety · March 1, 2024

Over 15 million root canals are performed each year. Learn what the procedure involves, what to expect during recovery, and when it's necessary.

Root canal treatment (endodontic therapy) removes infected or inflamed pulp from inside a tooth, then cleans, shapes, and seals the space to save the tooth.

Signs You May Need a Root Canal

- Intense pain when biting or chewing - Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold - Pimple-like bump on the gums - Cracked or chipped tooth - Swollen or tender gums - Deep decay or gum darkening

The Procedure

1. Exam and prep — X-rays taken, local anesthetic applied, dental dam placed 2. Cleaning — Pulp removed from chamber and canals; space shaped for filling 3. Sealing — Canals filled with gutta-percha and adhesive cement 4. Restoration — Crown or filling placed at a follow-up visit to restore full function

Most root canals take one or two appointments of approximately 90 minutes each.

Recovery

Some sensitivity for a few days is normal. Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until fully restored. Soft foods (yogurt, eggs, fish) are recommended initially. Over-the-counter pain relievers manage most discomfort.

Why Timing Matters

Delaying treatment increases the risk of abscess, bone loss, and tooth loss. Once pulp infection spreads, extraction may become the only option.
