4 Things You Can Do to Help Your Dental Implants Last Longer
By Dr. Rob McVety · November 5, 2024
Dental implants can last decades with the right care. Here are four simple habits that protect your investment.
Dental implants boast a 90–95% success rate even after 20 years — but longevity depends on how well you care for them.
1. Brush and Floss Daily
Just like natural teeth, implants need regular cleaning. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste. Floss carefully around the implant crown using implant-safe floss or an interdental brush.
2. Avoid Tobacco
Smoking significantly increases the risk of implant failure by impairing blood flow and healing. If you smoke, quitting is the single best thing you can do for your implants and overall oral health.
3. Protect Against Grinding
If you grind your teeth at night, a custom nightguard can prevent excessive force on your implants and surrounding teeth.
4. Keep Your Regular Checkups
Schedule cleanings and checkups every six months. Our team will monitor bone levels, check for any early signs of peri-implantitis, and keep your implants in top condition.
