Everyone has experienced tooth or jaw pain at some point in their lives. It could be because of a cavity or even a sinus infection. However, there are some cases where it’s merely wisdom tooth pain If you’re between the ages of 15-25, some signs and symptoms will alert you of a tooth that has become impacted. That said, here are three warning signs that indicate your third set of molars might be impacted and will need to be removed.
What Are Impacted Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars located in the very back of the mouth. They’re usually the last set of teeth to grow in for people between ages 15 and 25. While some people’s teeth will grow normally, others will have molars that become stuck under the gum or are only able to partially break through the soft tissue. These are often referred to as impacted wisdom teeth. It happens because the jaw doesn’t have enough space for all the teeth that are growing in or because the tooth comes in at the wrong angle and bumps the tooth in front of it.
Warning Signs That Indicate Impacted Wisdom Teeth
Not sure if you have impacted wisdom teeth? Here are the three main warning signs to look out for:
Pain
When wisdom teeth are impacted, they can cause pain in areas other than the tooth and jaw. Since they’re located in the back of your jaw, these areas can become inflamed and cause a lot of pressure on the TMJ joint and the side of one’s face. This pain can sometimes be mistaken for allergies or a sinus infection.
Swollen Gums or Jaw
Most people expect swelling on the gums or along the jawline when their wisdom teeth are erupting. However, several other areas that may be affected as well. People with impacted wisdom teeth often experience swelling in the neck or shoulder glands, sinuses, face, and around the jaw.
Bad Taste and/or Bad Breath
Because wisdom teeth are located at the very back of the mouth, they can be difficult to clean, especially as they erupt through the gums. Once they break through the surface, small crevices develop between the tissue and the newly erupted tooth, creating perfect hiding spots for bacteria and other debris. As a result, it can contribute to a bad taste in the mouth or bad breath.
